Switzerland began its ground and flight tests of French Rafale fighter in the tendering process for the program adopting a new generation combat aircraft. This was reported in the press release, managing procurement of Swiss military - Armasuisse.

Total Switzerland intends to purchase 20 to 30 new-generation combat aircraft to replace the existing fleet of F-5 fighter jets. It is envisaged that the tender winner will be announced in July 2009 and the signing of the contract will be held in 2010. Delivery of equipment should be completed before the end of 2012.
